Rehoboth Empowers Dreams program holds showcase event

December 6, 2016

Rehoboth Elementary School staff and students held an event for the community Nov. 3 to showcase the Rehoboth Empowers Dreams program. This after-school program is funded by a 21st Century Federal Government Grant and helps students meet state and local standards in core academic subjects, while also offering literacy and other educational services to families of participating children.

During the showcase, students engaged in activities ranging from painting and baking to gardening and wildlife. Parents were treated to storyboards that conveyed the focus of each class.

One class that students love is called Let's Get Active, a health initiative designed to get children outside and moving each day. While practicing their athletic skills through a variety of sports, students learn that exercising and staying healthy can be fun.

A technology class allowed students the opportunity to hand-assemble and experiment with robots provided by Vex Robotics. Students acquired engineering skills and a general knowledge of robotics, while also having fun in the process.

Photographer Kevin Fleming made an appearance earlier in the year during an RED class where he discussed perspective, subject matter and color with students. Off-site in Fleming's Rehoboth Beach retail store, he judged a student photography contest. In conjunction with the showcase, Fleming presented three winners with awards for their wildlife photography skills.

Program co-coordinator Cody Smith said, “This valuable after-school program gives students an excellent opportunity to pursue personal interests. Students grow academically because of community and staff after-school involvement.”
