Royals boys’ basketball falls in ESIAC semis

Delmarva Christian turns ball over 29 times in three-point defeat by Gunston
February 15, 2024

The Gunston boys’ basketball team proved that it’s hard to beat a good team three times in a season, as the Herons forced 29 turnovers to defeat Delmarva Christian 43-40 Feb. 14 in Georgetown. The Royals had beaten the Herons 56-38 in December and 74-56 in January.

The Royals are 11-9, while the Herons move to 10-7.

“The turnovers killed us,” said Royals coach Marc Hannah. “If we don’t turn the ball over, it’s a different game. Gunston’s been playing hard. Hats off to them. Their coach is doing a great job. They deserved to win the game. The way they played, they deserve it. Who knows what happens down the road. We have a game next Wednesday. What matters to me is that we send our seniors out with a win on an inspired Senior Day.”

The visitors took a one-point lead into the halftime break. The Royals clawed to a one-point advantage heading into the fourth period. The lead changed numerous times in the fourth, with the clock running out on the Royals down by three.

Royals senior Mason Bohinski led with 17 points and six rebounds. Malachi Light added 10 points and five rebounds. Kasey Bell pulled in six rebounds.

“We just been off,” said senior Ed Higgins. “Some of our key three-point players weren’t hitting. We’re not big. Once we stop hitting, we don’t have guys who are 6-5 to rebound the ball. They were way bigger than us. It stinks with the loss, but I love this team. I’d rather have this team with me than any other group of guys.”

Jonah Smith led the Herons with 18 points. Aiden Dunlap added 10.

The Royals will host Aspira High School Wednesday, Feb. 21, for Senior Night. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
