Salvation Army Creative heARTs open house set Aug. 19 in Millsboro
The Salvation Army Developmental Disabilities Program announced its eighth annual open house featuring artwork from the artists of the Creative heARTs program will be held from 2 to 4 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 19, at the Millsboro Art League. The artists will be there to discuss their paintings. For those unable to attend the open house, the exhibit will be be on display Friday to Sunday through the month of August,
The goal of this community program is to support people with developmental and cognitive disabilities in becoming an integral part of their communities. Participants hold jobs within the community, volunteer with other nonprofit agencies, and participate in many community activities with the support of DDP staff. An art program has been offered since 2007. The individuals who are involved in Creative heARTs are dedicated to their craft and will spend many hours a week trying to perfect it. The artists work in many different media including watercolor, acrylic, and pen and ink.
The Creative heARTs artists have been taking classes with art league artists since 2010. Barbara Harris and Arlene Baylor teach the Creative heARTs artists about twice a month. Over the years they have worked with watercolors, ceramics and mosaics.They have recently begun to study pointillism, the art of using dots made with various items to create a painting.
"The artists have had a fun year both with the MAL artists and at our program. They have created their own background papers and are doing a lot of multimedia pieces. They are fun to do and fun to look at," said Harris.
Creative heARTs artists have continued to add new designs to their line of note cards and will have a large variety available for purchase during the open house. Card sales help purchase supplies for the artists to continue to create. A popular design, the Tree of Hope, has also been made into a bag that will be available during the event.
