Samona ‘Nel’ Pickett-Cann, nurse assistant

June 21, 2018

Samona Janel "Nel" Pickett-Cann, the second daughter to the late Samuel Pickett and Mattie Mae Pickett, was born April 25, 1967, at Milford Memorial Hospital. She graduated from Milford High School in 1985. She later received her training to be a certified nurses assistant at Delaware Technical Community College in 2001. Samona was the loving mother of Ebonita Pickett and Kemp Brittingham Jr.

Samona met her husband, Donovan Lamont Cann, about 15 years ago. Their relationship grew and blossomed. The result, a beautiful fall wedding Oct. 20, 2012. Samona had a host of friends, which includes the Fire n Ice sisterhood, Sisters in Motion, nurses from the Mt. Enon Baptist Church, in which she participated, and family members of her many clients.

Samona was a loving wife, an attentive mother and grandmother, and she was super organized. Raziyah Pickett, her only grandchild, was the light of her life. They were inseparable. Nel was very caring and loving. This was evident by the attention she provided to the many many clients she assisted over the years. She was also instrumental in initiating family gatherings. Family was very important to her, and she never had a problem expressing how much she loved us. She enjoyed playing spades, shooting pool, riding motorcycles and making sure her hair and nails were done. Samona had a colorfully expressive way of saying things; those who knew her are very familiar with those intimate expressions.

Samona Pickett-Cann was very direct in what she said. If she said it, she meant it. She was a take-charge kind of lady (shucky ducky, quack quack); however, behind that tough exterior she had a huge heart and would give you the shirt off her back.

Nel's attempt to wind down after a long day of work would include watching judge shows, Young and the Restless, or Family Feud, while doing Raziyah's hair, her own hair, or her nails. She was always doing something.

Samona will be missed but not forgotten by Donovan Lamont Cann, Ebonita J. Pickett, Kemp B. Brittingham Jr., Raziyah A. Pickett, Jacqueline B. Sullivan, Delba A. Smith, LaDetrich A. Clark, Ramona Y. Pickett, a host of siblings, family members and friends.

The memorial service will be held Saturday, June 23, at 4 p.m., at Bennie Smith Funeral Home, 717 W. Division St., Dover.
