Sen. Margaret Chase Smith said it best

May 12, 2017

Speaking on the Senate floor to the deplorable Sen. Joseph McCarthy (R-Wisconsin 1947-57), Sen. Margaret Chase Smith (R-Maine, Representative 1940-49, Senator 1949-73) said this:

"I speak as a Republican. I speak as a woman. I speak as a United States senator. I speak as an American."

I don't want to see the Republican Party ride to a political victory on the four horsemen of calumny, fear, ignorance, and bigotry and smear. Sadly, when someone seeking power and those who elect them are devoid of a sense of history we are doomed to repeat that history.

Who in the Senate or the House has the courage to speak the truth to power? Our country and its citizens are doomed to suffer the consequences. We deserve better than this. We deserve to be led by statesmen and stateswomen who are prepared for the awesome power we bestow on them.
