Shakespeare Festival a remarkable success

October 17, 2017

By all accounts, the Lewes Public Library's 2nd Annual Shakespeare Festival (Sept 18-23) was a resounding success. There are so many thanks that are due, we hardly know where to begin.

Certainly, we want to thank the Cape Gazette for its support in getting out the word of the event. We've had many compliments on our advertising efforts, and it's mainly the result of Cape Gazette publishing our letters and informational stories. The Cape Gazette supports not only the Lewes Public Library events but those of so many other charitable institutions in our area. We all are lucky we have a media outlet serving these institutions and the public so well. Thanks to another media outlet, WGMD, for giving us radio air time for the second year on its Out and About program.

Our vendors did a great job, once again. They are: Fork @ Flask at Nage Catering, Flowers on Savannah, R&L Liquors, Dogfish Head Distilling Company, and Ray Daminger Design, all offering work up to their usual high standards and a pleasure to work with. A special note of thanks to The New Faces of Shakespeare, a talented group of actors from the Possum Point Players who worked hard not only rehearsing Shakespeare, but figuring out how to maneuver around tables to perform their vignettes; the Brown Box Theatre Project for their workshops and giving us "Hamlet" on a beautiful Saturday evening; Dr. William Zak and his intriguing lecture on "To Be Or Not To Be . . . ;" Cape Henlopen High School (its Principal Nikki Miller and English teacher Tonya Karl); Jor-Lin Tour & Charter and its driver Bob Wotring; and the Folger Shakespeare Library and Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, D.C. We are always thankful to the Lewes Public Library staff - who helped with every event of the festival.

While nearly all of the festival events are free, an event like the dinner-in-the-stacks does cost money, so thanks to our generous sponsors: The Inn at Canal Square; Tidemark Federal Credit Union; Becker Morgan Group Inc.; George, Miles & Buhr, LLC; Griswold Home Care; I.G. Burton & Co. Inc.; Jack Lingo, Realtor; and Russ Palmer Builders Inc. We are aware that our sponsors get many requests from deserving charities; we're thankful to be a recipient of their generosity.

A special thanks to our talented local artisans who offered their work for the Silent Auction.

And please acknowledge my fellow committee members who put in hours of hard work with energy and good humor: Mary Costello, Dorothy Danegger, Rebecca Lowe, Carolyn Marshall, Barbara Vaughan, and Cindy Whitacre. If you run into them in the library, on the street, or in the supermarket, give them a pat on the back and thank them for their commitment to the library and for making this year's festival a success.

We look forward to next year's 3rd Annual Shakespeare Festival, a Lewes Public Library event.

Beckie Healey
