Shelter slap in face of Black community

May 25, 2017

I attended the meeting pertaining to the rezoning of the Belltown church. I raised the issue of where those who have reached the maximum days stayed. I was not given any response. This is a serious issue; whatever your stance for or against, it is a statistical fact that homeless people are more likely to commit crime and abuse drugs. This is a high-traffic area that contains no sidewalks.

It is directly across the street from an elementary school bus stop. Those advocating for the shelter have zero plans to deal with the foot traffic between these two busy roads. On top of that, they want to put a homeless shelter in a historically black area of Lewes. Not only is it a stereotypical face slap, it is another blow to the black community who will lose even more due to property devaluation and an increase in crime.

Those preaching that they help the poor are, in this instance, only furthering poverty.
