In an effort to improve pedestrian safety along a busy walking route in Rehoboth Beach, 850 feet of sidewalk is being installed along State Road in Rehoboth Beach.

Work on the project began Feb. 26. Charles McLeod, director of community relations at the Delaware Department of Transportation, said the contractor is aiming to complete the work in three weeks, weather permitting. Associated utility work could extend the project, too.

When complete, McLeod said, the sidewalk will be 5 feet wide from the existing sidewalk opposite Roosevelt Street to Lee Street, and 4 feet wide from Lee Street to Stockley Street Extension. The cost of the project is about $364,000 and entirely funded by DelDOT, he said.

The new sidewalk will be the second pedestrian improvement project on State Road in the past year. About this time last year, at the intersection with Munson and Grove streets, the city installed a new crosswalk across Munson Street, a new crosswalk across State Road and, a short time later, flashing pedestrian beacons. Bump outs were installed on all four corners of the intersection to shorten the distance across the street.
