St. George Church Christmas Bake Sale features heavenly Greek pastries

December 6, 2014

By public demand, St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Ocean City, Md., has opened its annual Christmas Bake Sale to the public through Friday, Dec. 19.

Popular choices include Baklava, paper-thin layers of individually buttered filo dough glazed in honey syrup and filled with chopped nuts and cinnamon spice; Kataifi, threadlike filo dough resembling Shredded Wheat, rolled around a mixture of spiced chopped nuts, then topped with a sweet syrup; Melamakarona, cookie drenched in honey syrup topped with chopped walnuts; Kourabiedes, butter cookie topped with powdered sugar; and Koulorakia, moderately sweet twist cookies rich in butter and eggs served with tea or coffee.

Event coordinator Nick Nicholsen said, "We live in an area where specialty Greek bakeries don't exist and are blessed to have many great Greek pastry bakers in the parish that give generously of their time and talents. The St. George Christmas Bake Sale gives our Greek and American communities the opportunity to get their favorite Greek Festival pastries for the holidays for offering as holiday hostess gifts, office party desserts, holiday cookie exchanges, and of course for their own family holiday enjoyment."
