Sussex Academy future medical professionals tour Nanticoke Hospital

August 16, 2017

A group of nine Sussex Academy juniors and seniors interested in pursuing careers in healthcare got an in-depth tour of Nanticoke Memorial Hospital and its many departments. At the end of April, Dr. Joseph Kim of the Nanticoke Physician Network led the group of students throughout many areas of the hospital and took time to answer any questions they had about working in the medical field.

Student met various leaders from their areas of interest in the medical field. Several students have dreams of becoming doctors and registered nurses; another hopes to become an EMT and one a social worker.

"The students were all just amazed at the experience," said Sussex Academy Academic Counselor Debbie Fees. "Because of the passion, dedication and sense of cohesiveness they witnessed, all the students are reaffirmed in their decision to pursue a career in medicine."

Areas toured included the Emergency Department, Cardiac Catheterization Lab, Radiology, Operating Room, Laboratory, Intensive Care Unit, Mother and Baby Care Center and the Progressive Care Unit. While on the Cardiology unit, students learned about the various staff who make up the cardiac team and got to view a cardiac catheterization procedure in progress. Students donned gowns and were taken into the Operating Room where they were educated on the complete care of a surgical patient.

The tour concluded with a lunch provided by Nanticoke's food services department, and a question-and-answer session with staff from several areas of the hospital.

"Viewing almost every department really struck me and made me think of all my options in the medical field," said Dom Santo, a Sussex Academy senior, in a letter thanking Kim and the medical staff of Nanticoke Memorial Hospital. "Before the tour, I was unsure if I still wanted to pursue a career in the medical field. But as of now, I can surely say that I do want to be in the medical field and hopefully one day be a registered nurse."

Nanticoke Health Services employees hope to continue the partnership with Sussex Academy to help the next generation of medical professionals pursue their dreams.
