Sussex County Genealogical Society meeting set Sept. 17

September 14, 2016

The Sussex County Genealogical Society will return from summer break with a meeting at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 17, at the new Lewes Public Library. Parking is free. Speaker Mike Dixon will discuss "Unlocking the History of an Old House."

Dixon says, "Just as families have a past, old houses and the land they are built on have histories. This practical lecture is designed to show you how to uncover that past and answer questions such as when was the structure built, who lived in it, how has it changed over time and what are its stories. The discussion centers on implementing an organized research process, what records are available, where to look for documents, and interpreting the findings. The discussion concludes by presenting suggestions for creating a history of an old house. If you know where to look, you may find the clues to the past."

The Lewes library has its own room dedicated to the public for researching their ancestry and society members would enjoy helping anyone who is interested in their ancestors. One member just found documents showing he is a descendant of an American who fought in the Revolutionary War. He will be joining the Sons of the American Revolution.

SCGS is an organization dedicated to promoting genealogy and education to encourage and instruct in genealogical research. The scope of interests reaches far beyond Sussex County and members concentrate on providing good and useful information to those researching their ancestry. They meet monthly from September to May with informative and helpful presentations. The educational committee holds multi-week spring and fall discussion groups.
