Sussex Master Gardeners to host open house and plant sale Sept. 16

September 12, 2017

Sussex Master Gardeners announce A Day in the Garden open house set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 16, at the Sussex County Extension office at the Carvel Research and Education Center, 16483 County Seat Highway, Georgetown.

There will be something for the whole family. Attendees will see how the garden has changed and grown since their last visit. There is a new Think Pink Garden designed to highlight breast cancer awareness, and an ADA path that provides wheelchair accessibility to the demonstration garden. Guests will learn about bees and butterflies, and learn how to attract them to a garden. Fall is a great time to plant purchases from the plant sale. At the Ask an Expert Table, attendees may ask gardening questions. There will be free workshops. In the Children's Garden, kids can play hopscotch and see dinosaurs. Ice cream will be available from the University of Delaware Moo Mobile, and ice cream will be free for children under 16 with a coupon from Farmer McGregor.

Special items this year include ideas for gardening for the fall season, lasagna gardening, the award-winning Garden Smart Garden Easy program, container and raised bed gardens, and Think Pink containers for those impacted by breast cancer.

Mini-workshops will be the Peter Rabbit Puppet Show at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.; Fall Into Spring containers with Gainor Urian at 11 a.m.; Fun Ideas for Your Own Art in the Garden with Candi Logan at 11:30 a.m.; and Handmade Stepping Stones with Wendy Ferranti at 12:30 p.m.
