Two Delmarva Power employees honored for volunteerism
Exelon honored two Delmarva Power employees at the company’s May 23 Energy for the Community Volunteer Awards Luncheon in Washington, D.C. John Allen and Doug Hudson were recognized for their community volunteer work with $10,000 in charitable contributions from Exelon to each local nonprofit that the award winners support in Delaware and Maryland.
“Our charitable contributions and volunteerism help improve the quality of life for our customers and local communities,” said Dave Velazquez, president and CEO of Pepco Holdings, which includes Delmarva Power. “This year’s award winners are shining examples of selflessness, kindness and passion, and the work we do as a company to power a cleaner and brighter future for our customers and communities.”
John Allen of Seaford, a region vice president and manager of external affairs in Delmarva Power’s Bay Regional Office in Salisbury, Md., was recognized for his work with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Eastern Shore. It provides children facing adversity in the region with a strong, one-to-one relationship that will change their lives for the better. Allen has had a big impact at Big Brothers Big Sisters, and according to the organization’s leadership, it might not even exist today if not for his efforts and contributions. He has volunteered with the organization for 12 years, serving on the board of directors, establishing partnerships for the organization across the region, launching its annual golf tournament fundraiser, and conducting workshops for young men in the region.
Doug Hudson of Selbyville, an engineering fieldman first class, was recognized for his volunteer work with the Selbyville Volunteer Fire Co., where he has served the community for more than 15 years. Hudson is now in his third term as fire company president. He is responsible for overseeing the organization, managing the annual budget, implementing cost-saving projects, and recruiting new volunteers. He also works in the field where he serves as a fire police officer and as an engineer on the fire trucks. He also drives the ambulance when needed.
Hudson was recently elected as second vice president of the Sussex County Volunteer Firefighters Association and will travel across the state representing the Selbyville and Sussex County fire departments for the next four years. The fire company plans to use the charitable contribution from Exelon to purchase an automatic CPR machine.
This year, 24 employees across the Exelon family of companies were recognized for their efforts, and their nonprofit partners each received grants from the company. An external selection committee comprising leaders from the nonprofit community selected these dedicated individuals for their volunteer efforts from among employees who submitted applications.
Through the Energy for the Community Program, hundreds of Delmarva Power employees volunteer annually to support initiatives including arts and culture, community development, environmental sustainability, and education initiatives that align with the company’s purpose of powering a cleaner and brighter future for its customers and communities.
In 2017, Delmarva Power contributed more than $1.3 million to local nonprofits, while its employees volunteered more than 11,300 hours to assist hundreds of organizations throughout Delaware and Maryland.
