UNICO inducts new members and plans events

October 14, 2017

UNICO recently held a meeting to induct new members, and plan charitable and social events for the year.

UNICO stands for Unity, Neighborliness, Integrity, Charity and Opportunity. Members have followed these guidelines since its inception in 1927. The organization brings those of similar background and interest together to reach out to neighbors in need and to represent the values of their ancestors - courageous immigrants who came in search of a better life and throughout the centuries have helped America grow into the impressive nation it has become.

Programs and events of each chapter aim to provide funds for local food pantries and shelters. The club encourages local youth to follow the good example of those they admire: family, friends, the famous and the humble, and to preserve the customs and traditions of their heritage.

Opportunities are numerous to join the fun and uplifting projects that renew the spirit by helping others. The Brian Piccolo Award supports local high school athletic departments. Tea at Harbor Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center offers quality time with senior citizens. Italian Film Night, pasta challenge and bocce tournament revive the Italian spirit and highlight culinary expertise. Opera at the Beach is dedicated to a special charity or need each year. Saint Joseph's Table provides nonperishable food items and blessed bread to area food kitchens. The Walk-a-thon and Symposium for Cooley's Anemia raises funds and awareness for this little-known disease. Italian classes underline the importance of this language in today's society and worldwide.

In the 2016-17 season alone, the Delmarva and Rehoboth Area Chapters of UNICO Delaware have donated over $8,000 to local and national charities with financial aid and supplies. For more information, email unicodelawaredistrict1@gmail.com.
