UNICO Rehoboth chapter activities continue March 19

February 25, 2024

UNICO Rehoboth Area Chapter celebrates Italian heritage and culture with the a movie night each year in January. It is a nice transition into the new year and a way to unwind after the busy holiday season,

A segment from the “Don Matteo” TV series is often shown in Italian with English subtitles. Members enjoy slices provided by Nicola Pizza, plus popcorn and other snacks and beverages. Proceeds are used to prepare Easter baskets for children ages 12 years and under, and gifts for those 13 and over, who reside in local shelters. Joan Boraski, UNICO chapter member and outreach chair, coordinates the Easter project, directing the buying, assembling and delivery of the Easter holiday delights. In January, new members Ann Bailey, Rosanne Hitt, Marina Hayden and Kimberlee Kelly were inducted by Steven Stanzione, chapter president, and Pam Notarangelo, vice president.

February’s Carnivale celebration featured a meal of jambalaya, Caesar salad, cornbread, beignets and beverages from Sunny Bay Café, with music by Bob and Judy Boesch, the duo known as Back Again.

The Feast of Saint Joseph will be celebrated during mass at 8:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 19, at St. Edmond Church, 401 King Charles Ave., Rehoboth Beach. In an age-old custom for Italian Catholics, the celebrant blesses and distributes bread in honor of this venerated saint whose intercession saved a Sicilian village from a severe drought. After the service, the remaining bread is donated to a local food pantry.

A representative from the National Thalassemia Association will address UNICO members and guests at 6 p.m., Thursday, March 21, at St. Edmond’s education center in Rehoboth Beach. The topic will be recent advancements in the research and treatment of Cooley’s anemia. The local chapter has been an avid supporter of this association, aware of the many who are suffering and have suffered from this disease.

Upcoming events include the awarding of $1,500 scholarships to honor an Italian American football hero, Brian Piccolo, and a special Kentucky Derby event featuring an innovative menu of Italian specialties to support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Shepherd’s Office.
