University of Delaware’s Coast Day event slated Oct. 1 in Lewes

September 24, 2023

The University of Delaware will hold its annual Coast Day event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 1, at the Hugh R. Sharp Campus in Lewes.

The event will highlight the cutting-edge research and community outreach taking place at UD’s College of Earth, Ocean and Environment. After last year’s event was canceled due to inclement weather, researchers at the college are eager to inform Coast Day visitors about everything they have been working on over the past few years.

“This year’s Coast Day will showcase how scientists at the university are developing knowledge to help us adapt to the challenges facing coastal communities and how staff are collaborating with Delawareans throughout the state to better prepare for these challenges,” said Fabrice Veron, CEOE dean. “I am so pleased that we will be able to welcome our community back to the Hugh R. Sharp Campus to explore these efforts and join with us to build a resilient and sustainable future.”

A number of family-friendly events will be featured at Coast Day this year including tours of UD labs and research vessels like the R/V Hugh R. Sharp; science talks from UD faculty, Delaware Sea Grant professionals, and students; marine critter touch tanks; a “SpongeBob Musical” song medley performed by the UD student-run Harrington Theatre Arts Company; and a visit from UD’s mascot, YoUDee, as well as food trucks and other exhibitors.

Coast Day aims to provide fun for families while they learn about coastal, marine and environmental science.

UD’s Hugh R. Sharp Campus in Lewes is located at 1044 College Drive, Lewes.
