Vet says boycott ‘A Dog’s Purpose’

January 19, 2017

I was greatly looking forward to "A Dog's Purpose," the movie which promises "a soulful and surprising story" about a dog and the human lives he touches.

I just saw the abusive video of what was done on set to a German shepherd. It was not an accident. It was thought out, considered acceptable, and a man steadily forced a frightened animal into artificial rapids. Furthermore, the dog's head submerged at the far end, showing as little forethought to his safety as was given to his emotions.

And while the entire crew watches, some misguided person is giving horrible, wrong and cruel training insights.

I have a training tip for everyone: If it's not OK to suggest it for a child, it's not OK to suggest it for an animal. Do not believe anyone who tells you that you just need to do an Alpha roll, or give a little choke with the chain, or the shock is just a mild tickle. I once believed dominance theory to be true, and I regret that.

More and more professionals are applying behavioral science and positive reinforcement training to all animals, from our companion dogs and cats to wild animals in sanctuaries. A great many species have been taught through rewards to understand what is being asked of them and to choose to participate.

The German shepherd was not given an opportunity to understand or choose.

Animal professionals, particularly those hired in Hollywood to create a tribute to our most loyal companion, must never operate on fear, dominance or aggression. They must not put an animal's life at risk for entertainment.

Send Hollywood a clear message. Boycott "A Dog's Purpose." Tell others why you are against the movie and encourage them to boycott as well. Read the book, and get lost in literature.

There is wonderful educational material and resources out there for people, including articles and videos on why the Alpha Dog theory is deeply flawed. Why these animal trainers are behind the times is beyond me. I will not sit through a movie knowing that the animals on set were poorly treated.

I will fully boycott “A Dog’s Purpose.”

Build a better line of communication with your pets. Choose behavior science over faulty and often cruel dominance theory. And support those who care about animals.
