Villages of Five Points Butterfly Club holds successful plant sale

May 24, 2021

The May 15 plant sale to benefit the Villages of Five Points Butterfly Club yielded more than $500, thanks to the efforts of the volunteers and the generosity of village residents and visitors.

Members of the club purchased plants, grew plants from seed, contributed plants from their own gardens, and then put them all up for sale.

Village residents perused the plants for sale and caught up with neighbors they hadn’t seen for some time on the gloriously sunny morning.

Some bought new plants for their yards and others dropped bills in the donation jar.

Many took a few moments to walk through the butterfly nursery, the club’s first effort. Located along the walkway to the children’s playground, the garden contains butterfly host and nectar plants. A nearby box contains educational sheets for children.

The club started the project last year and has recently added to it. Plants now include several types of milkweed, a host plant for the monarch butterfly; bronze fennel, a host plant for the black swallowtail butterfly; and spicebush, a host plant for the spicebush swallowtail butterfly.

The Villages of Five Points Butterfly Club members maintains the butterfly nursery, taking turns watering and weeding, and plant milkweed around village ponds.

They hope to add a stand-alone demonstration butterfly garden sometime in the future. Volunteers include Hilda Chaski Adams, Laura Marriott, Peggy O’Malley, Nancy Sakaduski, Jan Semmel, Nancy Thomson and Darlene Zlock.

The club’s main focus is the support of milkweed habitat for the endangered monarch butterflies, as well as supporting other butterfly species in the community.
