Virginia Elizabeth Elgin, woman of deep faith

December 12, 2023

Virginia Elizabeth Elgin, 67, of Ridgewood, N.J., passed away unexpectedly Saturday, Nov. 11, 2023, in Milton. She was born Sept. 4, 1956, to Mary Katherine (Elliott) Elgin and John R. Elgin.

Virginia was a bright, curious, and generous woman of deep faith with a wonderful sense of humor who loved to travel and explore different cultures aided by a gift for languages. She positively touched the lives of so many people during her life. Virginia was often surrounded by her pets, which she routinely shared with her pediatric patients, making their visits more fun than scary.

She is survived by her seven siblings, John E. Elgin, Mary Lou Boynton, James B. Elgin, Robert O. Elgin, Evelyn Elgin, Stephen W. Elgin and Elizabeth A. Prybylowski. Virginia was predeceased by her mother, Mary Katherine Elliott Elgin; and father, John R. Elgin of Upper St. Clair, Pa.

Virginia attended the University of California at Davis Medical School and completed a residency in pediatric neurology at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. She was double-boarded in both pediatrics and neurology. Before pursuing a medical degree, she received a bachelor’s degree in linguistics from Pomona College.

She practiced medicine in New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia before winding down her career as an advisor to the Food and Drug Administration's generic drug division. Virginia had a passion for animals, making jewelry, reading, languages, conversing with friends about current events, and above all, exploring a deep and abiding faith in God.

Memorial Services will be held at a later date.

Contributions in Virginia's memory can be made to the Mary and John Elgin scholarship fund at Randolph College in Lynchburg, Va.
