Volunteer training to assist older adults set Sept. 8, 13, 22, 26

September 4, 2016

Brandywine Village Network: Sussex County is looking for volunteers to help older adults fulfill their wish to remain living independently at home for as long as possible. Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds can help older adults in a variety of ways, like providing transportation to appointments, helping with small household tasks or going on friendly visits.

"Our volunteers have the opportunity to make a difference in the daily lives of the older adults in our program," says Joanne Saltzberg, BVN's volunteer coordinator. "When a member requests assistance, like a ride to the doctor or help setting up a new computer, I go to our volunteers and find someone who is available to help." She says this system is flexible and responsive to both the needs of BVN members and the schedules of volunteers.

Brandywine Village Network: Sussex County is a community-based, aging-in-place program of Jewish Family Services of Delaware. It combines professional care management with a network of volunteers to ensure that older adults have the support they need to live safely and securely in their own homes and stay engaged in their community. Like all JFS programs, Brandywine Village Network: Sussex County serves community members without regard to religion, race, or socioeconomic status.

Volunteer information sessions will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 8; 1 to 2 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 13; 10 to 11 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 22; and 2 to 3 p.m., Monday, Sept. 26, at JFS's office, 20684 John J. Williams Hwy. in Lewes.
