As a father, grandfather, retired warrant officer, former school teacher, neighbor and concerned citizen, I would like to discuss the tragedy that has befallen us last week.
This tragedy is also about political deafness i.e. security funding for school protection, lack of leadership throughout the system. My question is: Do we need AR- 15s allowable to 19-year-olds for purchase without any background checks?
Yes, the Second Amendment protects ownership of guns, but again do we need AR-15s in the hands of teenagers? The profound question here is how do we make schools safer?
How do we engage young teenagers to come forward when something is amiss? How do we get more parent accountability for their children? Schools have become babysitters for our children. Both parents working have deferred raising their children to others.
Traditional family life is waning. Social media has become the unfortunate standard way of life for our children.
I believe there is no human interaction with our youth; we have to get back to talking to one another and have personal interaction.
Too many violent video games have led to our children unable to separate reality from these games. In closing, may we open our eyes and protect our children before they lose their innocence.
