We must listen to our children

March 27, 2018

Guns matter, and control of their sale, ownership and use is vital to the safety of all citizens, and particularly children. I strongly back banning the sale of automatic weapons, assault weapons, and in particular, assault rifles, to individuals, and banning their use outside the context of well-organized militias.

I urge our elected representatives to vote to ban the sale, ownership and use of such weapons to individuals, and restrict their access to those trained in federal and state-recognized militias (i.e. National Guard and U.S. armed forces). They ought to do so even if it risks their position. This is one of those times when our representatives are elected to provide leadership in changing the quality of our lives and provide for the safety of our children. It requires courage.

There may be many steps in coming to our senses regarding gun control and safety, but the first and most important step right now is an outright ban on access to assault weapons. Period.

And our children know it.
