Westminster Presbyterian Church members dine with Home of the Brave veteran residents

June 6, 2016

Several members of Westminster Presbyterian Church recently spent an evening having dinner and fellowship with residents of Home of the Brave, a facility near Milford where military veterans are given transitional housing, food and security.  They are also given assistance finding employment, counseling services, access to healthcare, transportation and affordable housing.

The event was planned jointly by the fellowship and mission committees of Westminster. It brought the hospitality of a hot meal to the men along with the opportunity to join together in fellowship and conversation. Home of the Brave was presented with a check from a fundraising pasta dinner recently held at the church as well as a selection of office supplies and bus passes requested by the staff and donated by church members. Each veteran was given a Star for Warriors.

Stars for Warriors are created by some of the men at Westminster from decommissioned flags. The stars are cut from the worn flags and repackaged with the following statement: “I am part of our American flag that has flown over the USA. I can no longer fly. The sun and winds caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that you are not forgotten.”

At the Sunday service before Memorial Day, Pastor Frank Deming spoke about the friendship, warmth and joy experienced over the dinner. In his sermon he used passages of poetry written by one of the residents. The poetry emphasized the depth of feelings experienced from life events. Attendees at both events left with renewed respect for one another and especially for those who serve.
