It’s been almost two years since I wrote a letter. I used to write regularly. More recently, I stopped posting on Twitter. I still post on my blog occasionally.
About the time I stopped writing letters, I began posting videos on YouTube. I still do that. Doing videos is easier than writing essays.
I’m 78 years old now, and I have no desire to get into arguments or engage in debate. I’ve always been concerned about human rights. That hasn’t changed, but I have. For me, age has brought new clarity.
On Dec. 16, I posted a blog essay – “On The Verge Of 78.” In it, I wax philosophical about my upcoming birthday.
Prior to backing off Twitter, I was spending several hours each day on social media. I stopped because I realized I was finding ways to utilize the time that retirement brings. I think utilizing time is as much of a challenge for seniors as attending to health matters.
I’ve always been very active. Among other things, I’ve worked, run various businesses and taught. I enjoy people. I enjoy sharing.
Last year, I began utilizing the Milton library. It allows me to read what I want without acquiring new books. I’ve got thousands of books. I’m not sure what to do with them or what will eventually happen to them. Books and record albums are/were personal treasures. I formed bonds with material objects – translation: I hoarded them. There were other things I hoarded as well.
Last year, both Kathy and I started putting things up for sale and giving away things we don’t use. We’ve cleared out lots of things we no longer use and made some money in the process. As a result, our environment is leaner, as am I. I’m now within 10 pounds of what I weighed when I married Kathy 46 years ago.
We have also become members of the Lewes Senior Center and are utilizing its exercise equipment. We’re taking Zoey and Zach for walks once again at Prime Hook.
Last year, I wrote the foreword to a Touro University Law Review article, The Mad Hatter’s Quip: Looking for Logic in the Independent State Legislature Theory. I wrote on originalism – I critiqued originalism and compared it to psychodrama.
More recently, I volunteered to teach a course at the Lewes campus of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. I developed the course based upon material I was researching over the last several years. The course is titled, Fascism In America. It’s an 11-session lecture class that will run from 9 to 10:15 a.m., Wednesdays beginning Feb. 7 and ending April 24.

It turns out we have a vibrant community for those willing to venture out and explore. Sussex County is one of the fastest-growing counties in the country and the majority of new residents are senior citizens coming here to retire.
“What good is sitting alone in your room?” - opening lyric to “Cabaret.”
