I am writing this letter to possibly help people realize that the rules that are in place regarding staying off the dunes at Cape Henlopen State Park are in place for a reason.
It is sad to say that even though there are signs posted telling individuals to stay off the dunes, people still climb up them - whether it is to take that perfect family picture for their yearly Christmas card or to get a better view of the ocean - it is still against the rules.
I only bring this up because I had an unfriendly conversation with a woman at Navy Crossing this past weekend. I told her kindly that she could get in trouble and be fined for having her eight children on the dune for her family picture. She irately told me that she was fine and did not care about the fine because she wanted to take a picture.
I told her again that she was breaking the rules. She proceeded to tell me that I was being ridiculous, and that is when I picked up my phone and started to call the ranger station. She saw me doing that and immediately got the kids off the dune.
It is people like this that really get on my last nerve. They are selfish, irresponsible individuals and are ruining it for everyone else out there who follows the rules.
This is not rocket science and it only takes common sense. The public needs to realize the dunes are there to protect our coastline, and are homes for our local wildlife. Read the signs and follow the rules!
