Willey Farms volunteers collect trash on Route 13

June 22, 2017

A number of employees from Willey Farms on Route 13, Townsend, gathered their safety vests, gloves and garbage bags, and hit the section of Route 13 in front of the market to pick up trash in conjunction with the Adopt-A -Highway program.

Over the course of two days, the group collected 23 bags of trash including pieces of tires, a propane tank, and assorted hubcaps, side mirrors and mud flaps.

Donna Cavender, marketing coordinator for Willey Farms, said, "It's quite eye-opening to see so much trash ending up on the side of the road. It would be nice if people would consider recycling instead of tossing something out the window of their car. Folks don't like it when they have to pick up trash in their yard before mowing their grass, so it would be nice if they considered other people's yards along the highway."

The Delaware Department of Transportation encourages businesses and groups to adopt a section of roadway to pick up trash along a two-mile stretch. In exchange, the business or group gets a sign erected on their stretch of roadway announcing its adoption. For more information, go to www.deldot.gov and www.willeyfarms.com.
