William Edward Barrett, government retiree

William Edward Barrett, 80, of Lewes, passed away peacefully Monday, April 15, 2024, at Beebe Healthcare, Lewes. He was born Aug. 12, 1943, in Dunmore, Pa., son of the late William A. and Catherine Barrett. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend who will be missed by all.

Bill graduated from St. Paul’s Catholic High School in Scranton, Pa., Class of 1961. He went on to receive his bachelor’s degree from University of Scranton before joining the National Guard. Bill married his high school sweetheart, Mary, in 1966, and together they raised their three children.

Bill made his career with the Department of the Treasury as a skilled manager and trainer for over 39 years until his retirement. In his spare time, you could find Bill reading the newspaper, drinking a cup of coffee, walking the boardwalk, chatting with family and friends, spinning tales with his brothers, and browsing Facebook to keep up with his family from near and far. He was a friend of Bill W's for 20 years. Bill was a charismatic man who drew you in with his smile. He was a born leader, and his ability to be personable and kind to everyone made him well respected by all who knew him. His famous secret recipe BBQ chicken will be missed by anyone who had the pleasure of tasting it.  

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Veronica Barrett, in 2021; and his daughter, Patricia Kushner, in 2007. He is survived by his son, William B. Barrett (Kelley); his daughter, Michelle Sabin (Michael); his grandchildren, Ashley Kushner, Emiley Kushner, Craig Kushner Jr., Meghan Sabin, Allison Barrett, William K. Barrett, Sarah Sabin, Catherine Barrett and Abigail Sabin; and his siblings, Mary Catherine Rotert, and Robert, Joseph and Paul Barrett.

A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 18, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Hwy., Lewes.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, April 19, at St. Edmond Catholic Church, 409 King Charles Ave., Rehoboth Beach, where friends may visit beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will be held at a later date in Pennsylvania. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, diabetes.org/donate; or the American Heart Association, heart.org.
