September 5, 2023

A Wilmington boy, 14, faces charges after police say he stole a car from the Tall Pines Campground west of Lewes Aug. 9.

Police were called at 1:47 p.m. to the 18000 block of Ash Road for the theft of a 2012 Kia Rio stolen from the driveway of a Pennsylvania man, 75, police said.

The car was recovered that same day, abandoned on the 100 block of Truitt Avenue, Rehoboth Beach. Investigators discovered that someone had damaged the ignition on the steering column to steal the car, police said. Video surveillance captured the suspect with the stolen vehicle. After images from the video surveillance were posted to social media, several anonymous tips helped us positively identify the 14-year-old boy.

An arrest warrant was issued for the suspect, and he turned himself in on Aug. 31 to Troop 2 where he was charged with felony theft of a motor vehicle, and criminal mischief under $1,000, third-degree criminal trespass. He was released to a parent.
