‘Salted Earth’ screening and discussion set April 24

April 21, 2024

The Lewes Public Library will host a screening and panel discussion of “Salted Earth,” an award-winning short film about the effects of climate change on the Delmarva Peninsula, at 5 p.m., Wednesday, April 24, at 111 Adams Ave., Lewes.

The Earth Week event is co-sponsored by the library, Delaware Environmental Institute at the University of Delaware, Delaware Interfaith Power & Light, and Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware.

“’Salted Earth’ draws viewers into a world where nature's lush splendor surrenders to seawater intrusion caused by the combination of sea level rise and land subsidence,” said John Sykes, founding president of Delaware Interfaith Power & Light. “Through the eyes of scientists and those rooted to the land, the documentary captures a silent crisis unfolding along the Delmarva Peninsula, where the encroaching sea not only reclaims land but also erodes a way of life, leaving behind a sobering tableau of what could be a vanishing future.”

After the film, a panel of experts will engage with the audience, answer questions and offer insights into the local work underway to protect and improve coastal lands. Moderated by Sykes, the panel includes Dr. Holly Michael, University of Delaware professor and Delaware Environmental Institute director; Dr. Stephanie Stotts, associate professor of forest ecology at University of Maryland Eastern Shore; and Danielle Pratt, a doctoral candidate in University of Delaware’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Space is limited, and reservations are required. To sign up, go to lewes.lib.de.us or call the library at 302-645-2733.
