THE ONE BIG CHANGE

50 years ago I weighed 125 pounds. Today I weigh 125 pounds. But in between I had my ups and downs—20 pounds up, 5 pounds down, 45 pounds up, 10 pounds down. I was a yo-yo dieter until 8 years ago, at age 70, when all that excess weight just melted away. Well, it didn’t just melt away on its own, I made THE ONE BIG CHANGE—I changed what I put on my plate! Gone was all animal protein—meat, poultry, fish, eggs, milk, butter, cheese, yogurt and ice cream. If it came from an animal, if it had a mother, it didn’t come near my mouth.

That was 8 years ago! I stopped eating all animal products, adopted a WHOLE FOOD PLANT-BASED DIET with no added oil and never looked back. My husband went “cold turkey” with me and the payoff has been extraordinary for both of us, far greater than stable weight—-normalized blood pressure and cholesterol, renewed energy, absence of aches, pains and annual colds, plus the knowledge that we have lowered our risk for cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, osteoporosis, arthritis and much more. In addition, we have become aware of the effects of our demand for animal protein on world hunger, animal abuse and environmental degradation.

In the words of Dr. Richard Oppenlander, we used to be COMFORTABLY UNAWARE. But now we are AWARE—AWARE of the big picture and the larger implications of our food choices. What we choose to eat is no longer a private matter on our own timetable! We understand the urgent need for change and are compelled to share with others the personal and global impact of our dietary choices.

And so—we teach, we write, we speak, we share, that others may know and understand how and why to make THE ONE BIG CHANGE.

Helpful books and websites abound. Here are a few of our favorites:

•THE STARCH SOLUTION, John McDougall, MD

•THE CHEESE TRAP, Neal Barnard, MD

•PLANTPURE NATION COOKBOOKS, Kim Campbell

•HOW NOT TO DIE, Michael Greger, MD

•THE CHINA STUDY, T. Colin Campbell, PhD and Thomas Campbell, MD.

•THE WORLD PEACE DIET, Will Tuttle, PhD
