New Vegan Janet Enslen reports from Grandpa Mac’s in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, on ROOTING FOR VEGGIES:

I’ve had a lot of fun starting my vegan journey. At first it seemed like such a hard thing to do. But now, I am finding more and more vegan food to enjoy.  I recently attended Grandpa Mac’s restaurant, for their monthly cooking demonstration held on the last Thursday of each month at the restaurant in Coastal Hwy in Rehoboth.  Oh wow!  What a great vegan gem!!

Delaware Today magazine named them The Best Vegan Friendly restaurant last summer, and it was easy to see why. Their menu has many Vegan selections, and many others can be made vegan upon request.  Their food is fresh and delicious.

Owners Hari and Orion Cameron have been vegans all their life. Hari is an award-winning chef and a terrific demonstrator. He really knows his stuff - classical cooking techniques, nutrition and food science.  He started off the evening talking us through a tray of different root vegetables, several of which I had never seen before: Jerusalem artichokes, Oyster Roots, celery roots.

Hari showed us how to make several delicious dishes with root vegetables, and we got to taste each one. He made a vegan version of each dish and about a quarter of the crowd chose the vegan option.  It was a blast!  Long live Grandpa Mac’s.
