Great performances don't always finish first

May 21, 2012

Dre Miller had the best performances in the jumps at the state meet not to result in gold medals ever in the history of track and field. Miller jumped 22-feet-7-inches in the long jump and 45-4 in the triple, both good for second place.

Senior Isaiah Brown of Milford recorded a pair of sizzling second-place photo finishes, losing the 400 meters in 48.8 and the 300 hurdles in 39.1.

Brown did hang a pair of gold medals around his neck anchoring the Bucs in the Division I 4-by-800 relay as Josh Johnson, Taiwan Savage, Mike Doughty and Brown ran a sizzling 8:04. Josh Johnson would also come back and win the open 800 in a time of 1:57.

Milford closed out the meet by winning the 4-by-400 with Brown on anchor and teammates Josh Johnson, Tae Green and Taiwan Savage in a time of 3:25.

Mike Miller of Cape threw a personal best 43-6 in the shot put, good for sixth place.

The Cape sprint relay teams of Tyreik Burton, Raekwan Dukes, Chris Stigile and Dom Brisco ran 1:33 in the 4-by-200 and 44.4 in the 4-by-100, both fast times but out of the money.

Keiosha Shelton of Indian River won the 100 meters in 12.3 but lost to freshman Maiya Dendy of Padua in the 200, who ran 24.5, and Myra Wanamaker of Howard, 24.7, when she ran 25.3. Shelton is coached by Bob Hahn, former football coach at Cape and track coach at Beacon and now the Indian River head coach.

The state meet was replete with crazy good, record-setting performances, including state records by LeShon Collins of Glasgow in the boys' 100 meters in 10.54 and 200 in 21.37. An off-the-record athlete said Collins stepped in the blocks of the 200 and said, ”Good luck to everyone racing for second.”
