Chris Krueger qualifies for PGA Pro Championship

June 8, 2012

The folks at Kings Creek Country Club have yet another reason to be pleased with the professional staff at their Cape Region course.

Chris Krueger, director of instruction at Kings Creek, earned a spot in the PGA Professional National Championship tournament, to be held June 24-27 in Seaside, Calif.

Krueger is the only golf pro from Delaware and the Maryland Eastern Shore area to qualify for the 312-man national field.

The tournament is the top national tournament for PGA club professionals. The first 20 finishers in the tournament earn a playing berth in the PGA Championship Aug. 9-12, in Kiawah Island, S.C., and the winner receives exemptions to play in six additional PGA Tour events.

The 45th PGA Professional National Championship will be held on the Bayonet and Black Horse golf courses overlooking the Monterey Peninsula. All 312 entrants will play 18 holes on each course. The low 70 players (and ties) will play the final two rounds at Bayonet. In addition to earning PGA tour exemptions, winners will receive a share of a $550,000 purse.

Krueger has taught at Kings Creek Country Club since 2008. His students enjoy his use of innovative video- and computer-enhanced instructional techniques in the Learning Center at Kings Creek. Before returning to Delaware, he worked at the Jim Mclean Golf School at the Doral Resort and Spa in Miami, Fla., at the PGA National Resort and at the Everglades Club in Palm Beach, Fla., and at the Woodmont Country Club, Rockville, Md.

It just so happens that Kings Creek head golf pro Kevin Wiest also came from Woodmont.

Soltner Memorial Golf Outing looking for players and sponsors

The Second Annual Eleanor Soltner Memorial Golf Outing will be held this year at Jonathan’s Landing Golf Course near Magnolia, Wednesday, Aug. 15.

The event raised several thousand dollars for the benefit of Delaware Hospice last year, and the organizers would like to improve on their first year’s impressive results.

As with last year’s tournament, all proceeds will benefit the Delaware Hospice Center on Patriots Way, Milford. It is the only community-based hospice serving the entire state of Delaware, as well as southern Chester and Delaware counties in Pennsylvania.

Eleanor Soltner was a delightful senior golfer and Cape Region resident who competed in golf tournaments at Shawnee Country Club and in other tournaments held by the Delaware State Golf Association.

The tournament will accept registrations as late as 7:30 a.m. on the day of the event, with a 9 a.m. shotgun start for the four-person scramble format.

Sponsorship opportunities run from a $100 hole sign sponsorship up through a presenting sponsor option for $4,000.

The $100 per player fee pays for greens fees, cart, a refreshment cart, and an awards reception with lunch after the round. Silent auction items will also be available.

Local club competition results
The Kings Creek CC Ladies 9-hole golf group played two separate events recently.

On May 31 they played a 2,1,1 team event, in which the scores were counted among the two best balls for the par 3s, and one best ball score for the par 4 and par 5s.

Sue Eisenbrey, Mary Beth Merolla and Judi Pezone won the tournament. Linda Mazza won the closest to the pin contest on the 16th hole, with a shot that stopped 13 feet, 7 inches from the hole.

On June 4 the group played a round in which the lowest number of putts determined the winners. Nancy Barlow took first place, followed by Eisenbrey in second and Susie Shevock in third.

Kathy Nave won the closest to the pin contest that day on the fifth hole, with an approach landing 5 feet, 3 inches away.
