Triple Crown on tap; Father’s Day 5K takes off June 17
This Sunday morning will be the 22nd running of the Father's Day 5K that will be hosted by the Rehoboth Ale House and staged on Wilmington Avenue and the boards. The event will begin at 7:30 a.m. with registration to begin at 6:15 a.m. The Striders are expecting one of the largest fields of the summer, based on some early high preregistration numbers. The course begins on Wilmington Avenue and travels down Christian Street and Scarbourough Avenue before looping the Country Club development and returning to the Boardwalk. Preregistration will end on Friday night at midnight, while runners can still register on Sunday morning at the Boardwalk. The Father's Day 5K always seems to bring out lots of families and children who start their day off by completing the event. Year after year, many stories come out of the Father's Day 5K. Eagleman Tri
A large group of locals traveled to the Eagleman Triathlon last weekend, highlighted by Rick Brokaw of Lewes, who finished fifth in the 50-54 age group at the event in Cambridge, Md., with a time of 4:42:58. Rick was only seven minutes behind the champion, who was timed in 4:35. Rick had the third-best swim, fourth-best bike and third-best run when looking at splits from the top five finishers. Nearly 2,000 competitors took part, and names were from all over the country. I did get one report locally following the event that Rehoboth Beach Running Company’s Marybeth Evans passed 325 people in the race, while only eight passed her. Marybeth could not be missed in the race as she wore her hot pink Sugoi tri-suit and carried a water bottle in her right hand and a Timex calculator in her left hand. Congratulations to all the locals who took part in such a quality event.
Tri note - Don’t forget, registration is open for the Bethany Beach First Responders Triathlon & Duathlon scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 23, in Bethany Beach. This will be a USA Triathlon sanctioned event and will take place in the heart of Bethany Beach. It replaces the longtime Sea Colony Triathlon and features a 1,000-meter swim/beach run (.62 miles), 30K bike (18.5 miles), and 7K run (4.35 miles). Visit bethanybeachtri.com for more information.
Striders Triple Crown
This weekend will mark the second annual Striders Triple Crown Series consisting of three events, three towns, in three days. Runners or walkers who reach the finish line in all three events will qualify for Triple Crown Awards to be presented at the Jungle Jim’s 5K on June 23. There is not a separate triple crown application nor an entry fee to register for the triple crown; just register for the individual events as you would normally do and we will track your results. Last year, the opening year, 10 runners completed the challenge by completing all three events and we hope to double that number this time around. Good luck!
