YMCA 5-Miler approaches 30-year milestone

July 13, 2012

The Seashore Striders' and Rehoboth Beach’s longest active road race, the YMCA 5-Miler, will start from Deauville Beach in Rehoboth at 7:30 a.m., Sunday, July 22. The race began in the early '80s with mostly locals taking part and just about 100 participants averaging the early year totals.  This year’s event will include a pancake breakfast hosted by Catcher’s restaurant as a celebration of 30 years as well as 30-year finisher medals for participants as they cross the finish line.  I have been involved in the event for 22 of those years as a director and participated in the 1983, '84 and '85 events.  One of my goals for the 30th annual is to bring back any of the former winners, directors and organizers from the early years when the race was getting started.   If you are one of those people, the Seashore Striders invite you to the event; please email Tim Bamforth at tim@seashorestrider.com with contact information and your early involvement.

Top 10 females honored by New Balance

New Balance on Route 1 in Rehoboth Beach honored women's running July 7 as the top 10 finishers in the Seashore Striders Women’s Distance Festival 5K were presented with New Balance gift bags by Fran Donaway representing New Balance.  The female race went off first at 7:30 a.m. at 82 degrees, while the male race went off at 8:05 a.m. as temperatures rose to 85 degrees.  The Seashore Striders team made an effort to cool the runners down as they set up a water tent at the finish, added a water stop on the course and brought in the Sussex County paramedics as well as the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company for added safety.

“We are always very cautious when we have events under hot and humid conditions, and we try to go the extra step to keep runners safe,” commented Rich Tikiob of the Striders.  “The runners seemed to back off a bit and run safely, and we had no major issues.”

The corn run

The corn is rapidly growing; timing should be right for the first Corn to Run 5K that will be held at 9 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 29, at the East Coast Garden Center in Millsboro. Participants should be prepared for a unique experience as they run along the course carved through a nine-foot cornfield.

This unique 5K is a 3.1-mile course that will wind through a 200-acre cornfield across from the garden center. Proceeds will be donated toward the center's young gardener program, which encourages elementary students to get outdoors and engage in healthy and productive activities. Participants of the race are welcome to attend East Coast Garden Center’s fall festival immediately following the race. There will be plenty of beer, brats, line dancing and hayrides to go around.  Visit the Seashore Striders website to register early.  It should be a corny good time!

Race for the Ribbon

Next Saturday morning, July 21, the Greene Turtle will be alive in Rehoboth Beach as the popular restaurant on Wilmington Avenue will host the Fifth Annual Race for the Ribbon 5K.  The Ribbon is a popular stop for runners in the summer series, as it always has the best giveaways of the summer and an enthusiastic crowd for a great charity, the American Cancer Society.  Much of the success of the event is due to the hard work of organizer Stephanie Shuttleworth and her team of volunteers.   Shuttleworth’s Ribbon has raised $40,000 over the past four years and has become a real positive event for the community.  Proceeds from this year's race will benefit the American Cancer Society in memory of Nancy L. Hendershot and will also benefit the Madison Handley family.

“The impacts of cancer touch each and every one of us at some point in our lives.  While we will still be making a sizable donation to the American Cancer Society, this year a portion of our proceeds will go directly to a family right here in our Cape community,” explains Shuttleworth.  "Two-year-old Madison Handley was recently diagnosed with bilateral retinoblastoma, a rare cancer of the eye that affects only 300 children in America each year.  Madison’s parents Erin and Rob need our help.  Erin is a kindergarten teacher in the Cape Henlopen School District.  She and her husband are doing whatever it takes to get Madison well again.  Our fundraising efforts will hopefully ease the burden for Erin and Rob.”

Don’t miss the Ribbon, as it should be a great event for a great cause.  Visit www.seashorestriders.com to get signed up.
