Choral society to present Handel's 'Messiah' Dec. 8 in Dover
Under the direction of Dr. James Wilson, The Delaware Choral Society will present Handel’s "Messiah” for a single performance at 7 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 8. The program will feature world-renowned soloists Britania Redington, Priscilla Jane Smith, David Koh and Jonathan Lasch.
This beautiful oratorio is perhaps one of the most famous written in the English language, celebrating the journey of the Christian faith through the Old Testament and into the New Testament. "Messiah" consists of three sections. In the first, the way is paved for the Redeemer’s coming. Part Two describes the Passion, death and resurrection of Jesus. It concludes with the familiar "Hallelujah Chorus." It was at this point in the oratorio, during one of the early London performances, that King George II spontaneously rose to his feet in a spirit of exaltation. Audiences have traditionally repeated this practice ever since. In Part Three, the spiritual messages represented by Christ’s teachings are set forth for the instruction and benefit of all.
The concert will be hosted in the sanctuary of the Wyoming United Methodist Church at 216 Wyoming Mill Road, Dover.
