10th Annual Dogfish Head Poetry Prize celebration set Dec. 9

December 7, 2012

Presentation of the Dogfish Head Poetry Prize will take place from 2 to 4:30 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 9, at Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats, 320 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth. The contest is sponsored by Sam Calagione, owner of the restaurant and of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery.

The presentation has, in past years, taken place during the annual John Milton Celebration of Poets and Poetry in Milton, but as this is the 10th year for the prize, it is fitting that it take place in the home of its origin.

The contest is open to poets on the Delmarva Peninsula and winners have come from as far north as Wilmington, as far south as Onley, Va., as far east as Rehoboth, and as far west as Centreville, Md. Traditionally, the winner’s name is kept secret until the prize is awarded.

The winning poet will receive $200, two cases of Dogfish Head beer, and their manuscript will be published as a chapbook. The chapbook portion of the prize is sponsored by Dennis Forney of the Cape Gazette.

There will be readings by previous winners James Keegan, Michael Blaine, Stephen Scott Whitaker, Anne Agnes Colwell, Linda Blaskey, Amanda Newell, David Kozinski and Sherry Gage Chappelle.

The event will be emceed by Jamie Brown, editor of The Broadkill Review, owner of The Broadkill Press, founder of the John Milton Celebration of Poets and Poetry, and staunch supporter of all things literary in Sussex County. Refreshments will be provided by Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats.
