Celebrate the Winter Solstice on Burton Island Nature Preserve

Preregistration is required
December 11, 2012

Delaware Seashore State Park will host a winter solstice hike of Burton Island Nature Preserve at 3:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 21. The winter solstice occurs when the sun is in the southernmost part of the sky, and it marks the first day of winter.

During the hike, a park naturalist will cover the history of the island and identify native plants and wildlife present. After the 1-mile hike, participants will have the opportunity to watch the sun set over the Indian River Bay.

Park staff recommends that visitors dress for the weather and wear shoes or boots that can get muddy. The cost of this program is $4 and preregistration is required.

The hike begins at the park office at the Indian River Marina off Route 1, 4.5 miles south of Dewey Beach. For more information or to register, call 302-227-6991 or go to destateparks.com.
