Hockey for Haxton is a hit

Donations can still be made until Dec. 31
December 24, 2012

The annual Hockey for Haxton indoor hockey tournament was played Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 22-23 at Mariner Middle School gymnasium.Thirty-seven teams, with more than 300 participants playing, took to the floor for a weekend of dribbles, shots, saves and camaraderie. It was a weekend of hockey and remembering a great hockey player and friend.

The two-day event raised nearly $6,000 for Easter Seals and the annual Haxton scholarship that benefits current Delaware Shore Field Hockey senior members in memory of Amanda Haxton. This year's scholarship was given to Sarah More from Mt. Pleasant High School. She will be attending Juniata College in fall 2013 and playing field hockey for the Eagles.

Amanda Haxton was a member of Delaware Shore Field Hockey before passing away as a result of injuries from an auto accident. She first played with Delaware Shore starting in 2001. Amanda also played her high school field hockey at Cape Henlopen High School in Lewes. After graduation, she played one season at ESU before the accident. Delaware Shore has been honoring Amanda with an indoor hockey tourney since the accident in 2007. This event has been coupled with the Georgetown Chapter of Easter Seals, where Amanda spent time in rehabilitation before her passing.

"This year was a good year for us," said event organizer Danielle Renken. "It was really great to see everybody [players and their families] together again laughing, having fun and playing hockey. In the stands you hear people reminiscing of the hockey days when we would all, including Amanda, play together. It was like the old days. It's exciting to see the same dedicated teams return each year."

Many local field hockey umpires donated their time to umpire the games for the benefit of the award and Easter Seals at Mariner Middle School in the Cape Henlopen School District.

Donations can still be made until Dec. 31, and they will benefit the Haxton Award and Easter Seals. The donation link is on the home page of the Delaware Shore website at www.delawawareshorefh.org.
