GFWC Women's Club of Indian River donates to People's Place

December 29, 2012

Members of the GFWC Women’s Club of Indian River collected women’s and children’s socks, slipper socks, slippers and pajamas to donate to People’s Place in Milford.  The club has also received about 15 pieces of fleece to make no-sew blankets. They finished one and also donated it to People’s Place in December. The ladies will be working in the winter months to make the rest of the material into blankets to be donated locally.

The WCIR fundraiser for the year is Save a Deer and Save your Dear by selling deer whistles for $10 each. Anyone interested in purchasing these may call 302-947-2640.

The WCIR is a community-minded group of General Federation of Women’s Club members working in the Long Neck and Millsboro area. Eight members participate in mentoring in the Long Neck Elementary School. January has been proclaimed Mentoring Month.  The club also participates in the Long Neck Boys & Girls Club and recycles used batteries and crayons. Members also collect Pennies for Chicks through the Heifer Program to buy chickens for women in other countries so they can raise them to sell the eggs and help their families.

WCIR Vice President Jackie Horst has been chosen to receive an Exemplary School Coordinator Award from Connecting Generations, and the GFWC Women’s Club of Indian River has also been selected to receive an Exemplary Community Partner Award to be received at the Fourth Annual Mentoring Summit at the Dover Sheraton in January.

The GFWC Women's Club of Indian River meets at 10 a.m., the second Monday of each month, September through May, at the Indian River Yacht Club on River Road, Millsboro.  Members welcome others to join them. For more information call 302-947-2640.
