Friends of Lewes Canalfront Park fund new sign

January 3, 2012

“What park? Where? Oh, that must be the one by the bridge,” is commonly heard around Lewes as folks try to find one of the most beautiful locations in the city of Lewes.

The Lewes Canalfront Park comprises nearly three acres in downtown, but is on a downslope to the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal from Front Street, where the park is not easily visible. The need was clear for an attractive sign compatable with those in the city's other parks to direct both residents and visitors to the park and it's amenities.

Recognizing that need, the Friends of Lewes Canalfront Park presented the City of Lewes a check for $5,600 for the construction and placement of the park sign.

This gift to the city was a direct result of ongoing support of Friends of Canalfront Park, who include individuals, businesses and organizations, as well as successful fundraising events such as Picnic in the Park. Funds raised by this nonprofit group also supports numerous free events, programs and other capital improvements in Canalfront Park.

In order to continue this work, the 2013 drive for old and new “Friends” will kick off soon along with the announcement of the expanded 2013 Lewes Canalfront Park event schedule, which includes the popular Picnic in the Park, Concerts by the Canal, and Cinemas by the Canal.

The Canalfront Park is located at Front Street in Lewes on the banks of the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal. For information, go to www.lewescanalfrontpark.org.
