Go Brit! to host weekly trivia night about all things British
For those who can’t get enough details about the royal family, British-isms and the cast and plot of Downton Abbey, Go Brit! is kicking off a fun-filled British Trivia Night.
Questions about all things British will be asked over the course of a trivia night that kicks off at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 9.
“We’re always delighted and amazed by the questions that people ask us about England, and lately, the royal family; so we thought this would be a fun activity for everyone,” said restaurant owner Alison Blyth.
The top-scoring team as of May 29 will have the opportunity to star in one of the famous and creative Go Brit! and Go Fish! commercials that air regularly on WBOC. All weekly participants can win prizes that include British T-shirts, gift certificates and British memorabilia.
Players can arrive with friends and loved ones to form teams, but teams also develop spontaneously at trivia night.
Blyth said there is a long tradition of quizzes in the UK, whether it's a casual pub quiz, a fundraiser for a national charity or televised contests between university colleges.
“If you want to test your knowledge of the UK, then our new trivia night should be right up your alley,” she said.
To get in the trivia mood, here are a few fish-and-chips facts, though on the trivia nights they will deal with all subject matter from history to pop culture:
• History buffs: The potato originally came to England with Sir Walter Raleigh. During World War II, fish and chips were the only foods not rationed in the UK.
• Math lovers: There are more than 10,000 chip shops in the UK, and the record for the most number of portions of chips sold in a day is 4,000. In the average year, Brits eat 300 million portions of chips.
• Culture connoisseurs: Food is a hugely important theme in Charles Dickens' classic 1838 novel "Oliver Twist" - fried fish warehouses, the forerunner of today's fish and chip shops, get a mention. In the 1999 film "East Is East," main character George Khan runs a fish and chip shop in 1970s Salford, near Manchester.
