Beekeeping 101 workshop set Jan. 12 in Smyrna
A Beekeeping 101 workshop will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Delaware State University’s Research & Outreach Center, 884 Smyrna-Leipsic Road, Smyrna.
Sponsored by the Delaware Beekeepers Association and hosted by Delaware State University’s Small Farms Program, this one-day course is an intensive beginning beekeeping educational opportunity for anyone interested in learning more about the art and science of beekeeping.
The class will cover basic beekeeping concepts, such as hive equipment, honey bee biology, colony feeding and placement, disease identification, and much more. This workshop is a great refresher course for all beekeepers, and absolutely essential for new beekeepers.

In addition to the presentations by beekeeping experts, the $50 registration fee also includes refreshments in the morning, lunch, a one-year membership in the Delaware Beekeepers Association (a $20 value), handouts for each topic covered, and the beginning beekeeping book “The Backyard Beekeeper” by Kim Flottum, editor of Bee Culture magazine (list price $24.99). Married couples/life partners are welcome to both attend - and only pay for one person. (Only one book will be given out per family/couple who attend.)

The Delaware Beekeepers Association’s mission is to educate members and the public about the importance of honeybees, their role in the pollination of plant species, and the joys and benefits of beekeeping. Founded in 1936, the association is dedicated to beekeeper education as well as helping identify and address local beekeepers’ challenges.
