Bagel Bombers youth baseball players seek donations to help local troops
The Bagel Bombers will coordinate a military care package drive through Saturday, Jan. 12, that will culminate with the presentation of donations to Operation We Care on Sunday, Jan. 13, at Sussex County Airport, Georgetown.
Jeff Merritt, OWC’s lead coordinator, is grateful to the Bagel Bombers for initiating this 2013 collection effort. “A lot of people think about care packages just during the holidays, but the need is there 365 days a year,” said Merritt. “Hundreds of local Delmarva service men and women will benefit from these care packages - the troops just light up! It’s like a little slice of home comes to them.”
Adam Gelof, 11U Bombers coach and father of two players, said, “When so many Americans feel unable to express their support for our troops, this is a tangible way to brighten their day. Our players and their families are proud to lead this drive.”
The Bombers invite all members of the community to lend a hand by bringing needed care package items to Surf Bagel by Jan. 12. Dave Vitella, 12U Bombers coach and owner of Surf Bagel, hopes that with the support of the community, the Bombers can reach their goal of collecting more than 1,000 items. To better the odds, Vitella said, “We’ll give a free bagel to anyone who brings 10 or more items for the collection bin.”
According to OWC, the top 10 most-needed items include:
• Chef Boyardee canned pop-top pasta
• Toothpaste
• Disposable razors
• Instant oatmeal
• Microwave popcorn
• Pop-Tarts
• Tea bags
• Deodorant
• Shampoo and body wash
• Dental floss

Bagel Bombers Baseball is a local travel baseball organization that was founded in spring 2009 as one team and quickly grew into nine separate teams competing in ages 9U through 14U. BBB boasts a dedicated group of volunteer coaches and more than 100 players and families for the 2012-13 season. BBB believes in promoting the development of character and sportsmanship through athletic training and travel baseball competition.
Through the hard work and dedication of a group of volunteers from this community, young men develop their self‐confidence and camaraderie, gain leadership abilities, improve their athletic skills and represent their community. Most players are from the Lewes, Rehoboth, Milton and Millsboro areas.
