Words to young parents: Work out or get worn out!
Parents chasing kids down the street is a perfect metaphor for running into the new year; everyone is No. 1, and the fitness advice is “Work out or get worn out.”
The Race into the New Year 5K, held at high noon, Dec. 31 in Rehoboth Beach, attracted 217 5K runners and a bevy of young children who circled the block with the promise of a medal and a stack of Catcher's pancakes.
The event was No. 60 for the Seashore Striders' 2012 racing year. A small clique of crazies ran all Striders events and most Races2Run Seven Sisters summer events with a sprinkling of biathlons and triathlons, which begs the question: How do they do it and why?
Austin MacElrevey, 17, a Cape junior fresh off a 10:20.0 indoor two-mile victory at the Worcester County Meet, “strided and glided” to the finish line in 17:28 just ahead of Greg Cauller, 53, a York County calculus teacher in 17:31.
Nyandusi Omnrwa of Kingston, Pa., was third in 17:42, followed by Matt Dunn, 32, a fireman from Trappe Md., in 18:01.
Stephanie Hoag, 38, of Sparks, Md., was the first woman in 18:05. She was followed by Patrick Boddicker, 16, in 18:55 and Dan MacElrevey, 44, in 19:07.
"I finished in the top 10, which is good, and got beat by my son and chicked in the same race,” Dan MacElrevey said with a smile.
Relentless Cindy Conant, 51, won the women’s masters race in 19:50.
Simon Pels, 9, ran a 25:49 followed by his brother Ryan, 7, at 31:43. Paula Pels won the 45-49 age group in 20:22. Paula, a no-joke runner, is a former winner of the Rehoboth Beach Biathlon.
Leslie Kroon, 33, a former Cape cross country runner, won her age group in 25:53.
Breck Vanderwende, 39, the Bridgeville hay baler on the fitness cliff of falling into the master's division, won his age group in 20:55.
Peter Ewing, 51, won his age group in 19:13 followed by Bruce Clayton, 21:04 and Matt Hete, 21:17.
Larry Windsor, 61, of Laurel continues to amaze, winning his age group in 21:55.
Joanne Szczepkowski, 66, a retired teacher, continues to own her age category, running 25:24.
Nine runners over 70 and 16 between 60 and 70 completed the race.
Kids to great-grandparents, perhaps a new race for 2013 the Seashore Striders--the Space Odyssey 5K.
Saturday, Jan. 5, is the Race for the Hawks 5K at Saint Georges High School in Saint Georges. It’s the Kai and J.D. Maull Cape connection race.
