Cape's runs crooked number at Seaford, wins game 87-66

Vikings score 32 in third quarter
February 1, 2013

A trap-and-rap basketball game at Seaford Jan. 31 diverted all fan traffic to the back entrance through a maze of construction barriers. The large crowd was jazzed; even “Scotty from Meatland” was in the house! It was the perfect scenario for a favored team like Cape to get beat.

The Vikings lost the first half 37-35, as Seaford ran the floor, hit the glass and made free throws.

“We made defensive adjustments at halftime,” coach Steve Re said after Cape ran a 32-point crooked number at the Jays in the third period and coasted home for a dominating 87-66 victory.

“We changed our defensive approach at halftime but I never expected what happened in the third quarter,” Re said. “Maybe our players dialed into how good we can actually play.”

Cape backed off a little on defense, keeping Seaford in front of them, and began forcing turnovers, and it was off to the races.

Cape laid down a 32-point third period by shooting 13-for-17 from the field, including 3-of-4 from three-point land along with nine assists. Cape had 25 assists for the ball game - a school record until someone proves differently.

Cape placed five players in double figures led by Tyreik Burton with 19, Gekwan Pritchett with 17, E.J. Fountain with 14, Andrew Grau with 13 and Jon Warren with 11.

The Vikings improved to 9-5 on the season. Cape plays at Dover Tuesday, Feb. 5. Seaford dropped to 5-7.
