February 18, 2013

There is no doubt Lewes has a love affair with its dogs.

It's during the Lewes Winter Fest Barkfest that dogs and their owners really shine. This year's seventh annual pet pageant and third annual Yappy Hour, held the night before the Feb. 9 pageant, took place on Bank Street, which is renamed Bark Street for the pageant.

The Georgetown SPCA hosted a fill-the-van event both days to accept donations for the shelter. Irish Eyes in Lewes donated 10 percent of its proceeds from Feb. 8 sales. All entry fee proceeds and money from a 50/50 raffle was also donated to the SPCA. In all, $1,750 was raised for the SPCA.

Lesley Bowers, owner of P.U.P.S., Pawsitively Unique Pet Shop, served as the pageant announcer and introduced the 22 contestants in each of the four categories as they promenaded down the runway.

Pageant judges, all members of the Lewes Chamber of Commerce, were Teresa Ford, owner of Kids Ketch; Kathy Davidson, account executive with Comcast Spotlight; and Ashley King, owner of Piccolino. Mayor Jim Ford awarded the prizes to the following winners.
