Route 1 improvements ignore bicyclists

February 15, 2013

While the planned Route 1 improvements will undoubtedly make traveling safer, as an avid cyclist it is very disappointing. How can a route as heavily used by cyclist not include a bike lane? I have heard all the excuses many times, not practical, won't work with turning lanes, etc. etc. To these reasons I say go anywhere else in the country and you can see exactly how bike lanes are incorporated successfully under the same road conditions.

I have had many near death collisions with speeding cars racing inches by me in the turning lane. With a bike only lane the state police would be able to more clearly ticket such offenders. Of course the non-bike riding public will scoff at these ideas. They will always tell me it's crazy to ride on Route 1 because it's too dangerous, especially in the jammed rat race summertime. To this I reply, how else can you get from Lewes to Rehoboth, Dewey, Bethany and Ocean City by bike? It's time for Sussex County to get safe and install north and southbound bike lanes. The rest of the world already has.
