Donald C. White, Meals on Wheels volunteer

Donald C. White, 77, of Rehoboth Beach, began his life in eternity Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, surrounded by his family.

 

A native of Baltimore, Md., Don graduated from City College (1953) and thereafter attained his industrial engineering degree. He retired in 1985 as chief industrial engineer, Bethlehem Steel Sparrows Point Plant, Baltimore. He was a member of the Association of Iron and Steel Engineers from 1976 to 1985.

 

Don served eight years with the U.S. Navy, with three of those years active duty in Far East service aboard the USS Worcester, CL -144, post-Korea. He currently serves as sergeant-at-arms for the USS Worcester Reunion Association Finance/Audit Task Force, and has regularly attended their annual conventions throughout the country for over a decade.

 

While raising his family in Parkville, Md., Don served as president for several terms of the Parkville Recreation Council for Baltimore County, coaching football, baseball, also serving as a referee and umpire, leaving his positive influence on many players, coaches and families from 1969 to 1980. He also ran the Parkville Teen Center for several years. He was a member of the Baltimore Ski Club and American Legion Post in Parkville.

 

Don became a Delaware property owner in 1979 at Newbold Square, Rehoboth Beach, and served several terms on the condominium council, including office of president. Upon his full-time relocation to Rehoboth Beach in 1985, Don continued to positively impact the lives of everyone he met.

 

As a member of The Lutheran Church of Our Savior of Rehoboth Beach since 1993, Don served as a liturgical assistant, member of the church council, former treasurer and member/chair of the church’s board of finance. He particularly loved the Men’s Bible Study group, and being drafted to help with Vacation Bible School or Youth Retreat weekends at Camp Pecometh in Maryland. Don was a member of the Delmarva Emmaus Community.

 

In 2012, Don completed serving several terms as director for Meals on Wheels of Lewes-Rehoboth, most recently having served as president. He was a weekly volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels for over a decade.

 

At the time of his passing, Don was finance officer for American Legion Henlopen Post 5, Rehoboth Beach, serving in that capacity for many years.

Don’s passions in life were his family, snow skiing, traveling and gardening.

 

He is pre-deceased by his father, Charles Henry White (1979); mother, Dorothy Zopf White (2010); and first wife, Mary McKew White (1978).

 

Don is survived by his wife, Pat Campbell-White; son Mark S. White and wife, Jill, of Jarrettsville, Md.; daughter, Linda Shelley and her husband Thomas of Glen Rock, PA; daughter, Sandra Monigle & her husband, Kerry of Rehoboth Beach; stepdaughter, Bobbi Brooks and her husband, Rick Ward of Milton; stepdaughter, Carla Miller Scheder and her husband Steven of Lewes.

 

Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, Brian, Claire and Emma White, Thomas and Casey Shelley, Patrick, Lindsay and Emily Monigle, AJ, Tessa and Austin Brooks, Luke and Grace Miller; and a great-granddaughter, Marley Ann Brooks. He is also survived by his brother, Robert B. White and partner, Dennis Wayne Chupella of Rehoboth Beach.

 

Memorial services are scheduled at Lutheran Church of Our Savior, 20276 Bay Vista Road, Rehoboth Beach at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 2, where friends may call at 10  a.m. Friends may also call at the Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, March 1.

 

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations to The Lutheran Church of Our Savior Memorial Fund.
