February 27, 2013

The Rehoboth Beach Historical Society announces its Third Annual Needlework Exhibit Saturday, March 23, through Sunday, May 5, at the Rehoboth Beach Museum, 511 Rehoboth Ave.

The show will be judged by a nationally certified judge, and ribbons will be awarded. There will be two divisions: adult for stitchers ages 18 and older, and junior for stitchers ages 17 and younger at the time the work was completed. There will be two main categories, original and commercial. Ribbons will be awarded in eight categories: Beadwork; Canvaswork/Needlepoint; Counted Thread; Sampler; Embroidery; Heirloom Sewing (including quilting); Lace; and Miniature. First, second and third place will be awarded for each category, as well as a best in show across all categories.

Fees for entering the show are $5 for each entry for members of the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society. For nonmembers, the fee is $10 for the first entry and $5 for each additional entry. The fee for juniors is $5 for the first entry, and $1 for each additional entry. A maximum of five entries is allowed. Entries can be dropped off from 10 a.m to 4 p.m. between March 8 and March 18 on weekdays and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekends during that time.  Note that the museum is closed March 12 and 13.

Exhibitors who are not society members will receive free admission to the museum for the duration of the exhibit.

Programs will be held in conjunction with the exhibit, including a presentation on historic needlework pieces. The presentation will include a discussion of the Bayeux Tapestry, which is a 230-foot-long embroidered cloth that depicts the events leading up to the Norman conquest of England. The tapestry was made around the year 1070.
